Fulton County Cooperative Extension Reached over 900 residents to provide nutrition education and access to locally grown fresh produce.

Fulton County residents living in “food deserts” have been fortunate to have access to locally grown fresh vegetables and to receive nutrition education in their neighborhoods.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension, in an effort to address health disparities, will celebrate the end its first season of operating the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Shrine of the Black Madonna located at 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 from 10 am – 11:30 am.

The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Unit delivered an estimated 10,000 lbs. of fresh produce to over 900 residents living in four areas identified as food deserts. West End, Bankhead Highway, Palmetto and the Collier Heights communities have benefited from the delivery of fresh produce and learning about the importance of eating healthy, how to prepare tasty, healthy meals. Plans are being made to expand the number of communities being served in order to reach more residents and help them to make healthy choices and to live healthier lives.

The End of Season Celebration is open to all residents. Information about Cooperative Extension and other county services will be available as well as healthy treats and fresh produce from the Fulton Fresh Farmer’s Market Mobile Unit.

Call (404) 332-2400 for more information about the End of Season Celebration.

West End BeltLine Open Air Market- Summertime & the food is good!

A True Community Market
2011 market season (June to November, 1st & 3rd Fridays, 4pm-8pm)

This year four entities have come together to bring a green market to southwest Atlanta in the West End area. We plan to gather our strengths and varied skills to create a vibrant market on Atlanta’s BeltLine.

Patchwork City Farms (PCF) is a small multi-family owned urban farm located in the West End. They are dedicated to practicing sustainable agriculture. Patchwork grows vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Angel Green Eyes One of a kind handcrafted jewelry; aluminum, copper, semi-precious stones.

Mother Clyde Garden is the well nurtured project of Sister DeBorah Williams. Currently, peppers (all types) are being grown to supply farm to table restaurants and the West End BeltLine Open Air Market.

The Yardlong Bean is a subtropical/tropical plant and is widely grown in Southeastern Asia, Thailand and Southern China. The plant is a relative of the black eyed pea and grows 14 to 30 inches in about 60 days.

They come in shades of green and purple like the ones featured in the photo above. Also known as the Chinese Long Bean, they are chewy, crisp and are perfect for spicy dishes. Try them stir fried in an Oyster sauce and you won’t be disappointed.Find them at West End BeltLine Open Air Market.
